Listen ~ A 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes Post

31 Days ofFive Minute Free Writes(1)

Can you believe that 9 days have already come and gone in October?  Sometimes it’s hard for me to fathom how quickly time passes.  But alas, here we are on day 10 of the Write 31 Challenge.  Today’s Five Minute Free Write prompt is:LISTEN

And my timer is set…GO!

I’ll start today off with the definition.  According to the dictionary, LISTEN means:

to give attention with the ear; attend closely for the purpose of hearing

to pay attention; heed; obey (often followed by to)

to wait attentively for a sound (usually followed by for)

We all want to be heard.  But more than that, I think we all want others to really LISTEN to us.  There is a difference.  Often we hear and honestly, it’s like Charlie Brown’s teacher…”wah wah wah wah wah wah.”  We don’t give attention to the person speaking for the purpose of hearing.  That’s it…LISTENING is hearing with purpose.  Over and over in the Bible God called men to speak to His people and told this called man of God that the people would LISTEN.  And most of the time, they did.  And most of the time, they obeyed.  But then they forgot what they heard and they turned back to doubting God and His perfect plan for them and their descendants.

I want to LISTEN to God waiting attentively to hear His voice.  How do I do that?  Psalm 46:10 tells us to “Be still, and know that I am God….”

I realize that the verse doesn’t say LISTEN and know that I am God but honestly, we can’t LISTEN if we are not still.  And in the LISTENING we will know that He is God.  It’s a posture thing.  And I am so very guilty of allowing the busyness of the day keep me from even talking to God so LISTENING to Him is doubly hard.

I believe can hear His voice, when we are LISTENING for it, through reading His word.  I believe that we can hear His voice when we are communicating with Him in prayer.  And I think that we can even hear His voice when we are going about our daily activities thinking on the things above instead of binge watching our new favorite series. (I’m guilty of this one!)

And STOP…

Just one more thing, today I’d simply like to ask in closing…

What are you doing to LISTEN to the voice of God?

Until tomorrow…Joy to You!

Plan ~ A 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes

Welcome to Day 9 of the Write 31 challenge.  Today’s word is:And GO…

For the purpose of this post, I am going to look at PLAN as a noun.  Here’s how the dictionary defines it:

NOUN

a scheme or method of acting, doing, proceeding, making, etc., developed in advance

a design or scheme of arrangement

a specific project or definite purpose

It is safe to say that I had my life all PLANNED out from a pretty young age.  I knew what I wanted to be “when I grew up,”  how many kids I wanted, where I wanted to live, etc., etc.  I had a method to proceed with…a design…a definite purpose.  And I thought I could PLAN it.  I thought I could work it all out and make it happen.

But God……… (don’t you love it when the Bible says “but God”).

Proverbs 16:9 says:

The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.

Yep, God had other PLANS for me.  He does for all of us.   And I for one am so very glad.

The PLAN that we had for our family was not at all what God’s sovereign PLAN was..and what it still is.    And we have no idea the complete PLAN.  We’re in ministry full time.  That means that we may not always live in the same place.  That means that on vacations and holidays, we visit family instead of venturing off to a new and different location.   (Note: that is not a complaint.  We love visiting our family and our hometown). But what this also means is that we have had the honor and privilege of living in a few different cities.  With that, we have met so many wonderful people.  We have “family” scattered across the Southeast.  We have experienced so much that if God had allowed me to PLAN our lives, we would have missed.

I am grateful and blessed by the PLANS of the Lord.

And STOP….

Until tomorrow…Joy to You!

Truth ~ A 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes

Today’s prompt is…And GO…

The dictionary has a lot to say about TRUTH…

the true or actual state of a matter

a verified or indisputable fact, proposition, principle, or the like

the state or character of being true

actuality or actual existence

honesty; integrity; truthfulness

TRUTH is a big deal to my hubby and I.  We have made a valiant effort to be sure that our kids know and understand the importance of TRUTH.   I have known the gravity of TRUTH due to circumstances that for a period of time I found myself surrounded by.  And our world, our country so desperately needs TRUTH.

There are some words that are just hard to write.  So today, I am going to share a few Scripture verses, a quote, and a song about TRUTH.

The gospel of John tells us that  Jesus is that TRUTH.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. ~ John 1:14 ~

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” ~ John 14:6 ~

Winston Churchill said…

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is.

And one of my favorite Casting Crowns songs …

The Voice of Truth by Casting Crowns

Until tomorrow…Joy to You!

Hold ~ A 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes

It’s day 7 of the Write 31 challenge.  My Five Minute Free write prompt is:

My 5 minutes starts HERE…

My very first thought is to HOLD my loved ones a little closer.  With all that’s going on in our world, I just want those important to me within reach.

That’s the human side of me.  I think it’s completely within reason.  But then there is what I know to be true about God.  First, since I’ve got this definition thing going, here is how the dictionary defines HOLD:

to have or keep in the hand; keep fast; grasp

to set aside; reserve or retain

to bear, sustain, or support, as with the hands or arms, or by any other means

More important, what does Scripture say?

The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot.  ~ Psalm 16:5

Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. ~ Psalm 73:23

Okay, back to HOLDING on to those who are dear to me…and the truth about God.  He HOLDS us.  He is not surprised by anything and I mean anything that happens.  I just have to say a big, “Whew!!!” to that.  As Psalm 16 says, He holds my lot.  The name of my blog is Living My Portion.  If I didn’t believe Psalm 16:5, I’d have to rename by blog {smile}.  And I know He HOLDS me and my loved ones in His right hand just like Psalm 73 says.

And TIME IS UP….

Hope you don’t mind if I finish my thoughts…

I’m experiencing something very new as our son is now in college.  He’s 6-½ hours away.  That means that I can’t just have a meal with him or walk down the hallway to chat.  And because his class and work schedule is varied, I have to figure out when I can call.  Here’s the thing.  As much as I miss him, I’m really (surprisingly) okay.  See, ultimately he is the Lord’s.  And those verses that I listed above…well, they apply to my son too.  There will come a time when I will have to let my daughter go out in the world too and I have to trust the Lord to HOLD her just as He is HOLDING onto my son.  I find it comforting that I don’t have to worry.

So today, who are you allowing the Lord to HOLD like only He can?

I’ve gone way over my time.

Until tomorrow…Joy to You!

Story ~ A 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes Post

31 Days ofFive Minute Free Writes(1)

Welcome to day 6 of the 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes Challenge.  Today is fun because I didn’t know until 10 pm last night what the prompt would be.  I went to sleep thinking about the word:

And GO……….

When I think of the word STORY, I have three directions that my brain immediately goes.  Yes, I know that makes me sound a little crazy {smile}. The first is the old hymn by Fanny Crosby Blessed assurance.  The chorus goes like this:

This is my story, this is my song,

Praising my Savior all the day long;

This is my story, this is my song,

Praising my Savior all the day long.

Oh how I want others to say I praised my Savior all the day long when they tell STORIES of me.

Another direction was when my grandmother wasn’t quite sure if I was telling her the truth.  She would say, “are you telling me a story?”  Let me clarify that I did not lie to my sweet Nanny. At least not that I remember {smile}.

Anyway, I digress.  As has been my typical task with the Five Minute Free Write prompts, I first look up the definition of the word and then the synonyms.   The definition of STORY is:

a narrative, either true or fictitious, in prose or verse, designed to interest, amuse, or instruct the hearer or reader; tale.

a fictitious tale, shorter and less elaborate than a novel.

The synonyms are in my daily graphic around the word prompt.

The third direction is something given to me awhile back as food for thought and it has changed the way I think about the Bible in relation to STORIES.

All my life, I’ve been told STORIES out of the Bible.  In Sunday School, the teacher would say something like, “Today we will read the STORY of Noah.”  And we have Bible STORY books. I get it.  And in many ways, that is an accurate description…at least according to the one of the definitions of STORY … the Bible is a narrative of true facts.  And it is used to instruct.  There are verses and it can even be amusing.  (I mean I do think our creative God has a sense of humor).  I completely agree with all of that.  And then when you look at the synonyms…it is history, adventure, biography and even tragedy.  But can I ask you a question?

Do you think of referring to the accounts in the Bible as STORIES, makes it seem less important?  Less true?  I had never thought of this.  I grew up in church.  Every Sunday School class, VBS, even most of the Bible studies I’ve attended and gone through refer to them this way.  And then one day, I heard a pastor ask if we are honoring God by referring to His Word as a STORY.

And STOP…

My time is up and I do not want to belabor this topic but I can not stop here so please bear with me.  I really do see the value in expressing to children that we are reading or talking about STORIES from the Bible.  It helps them to understand, especially for very young kids.  But I also want to honor the Lord. So, my prayer as I close is that God’s STORY is honored.  That as believers we don’t water down these accounts to just a tale about people and places that could give anyone reason to doubt that God’s Word is true.  That when I am sharing or teaching others an account of the Bible that I don’t make light of the people and events that took place.  It’s Biblical history.  And it’s part of who we are.

I’ll leave you with something fun that I read – or heard – somewhere that said we should think of the Bible not as just a STORY but as HIS STORY.  Hint:  look at the word HISTORY.

Until tomorrow…Joy to You!

Trust ~ A 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes Post

31 Days ofFive Minute Free Writes(1)

It’s day 5 in the Write 31 challenge and well, this one is a bit challenging…

And GO…

This post is not challenging because of the word itself.  It’s a challenging topic.  Why?  Because I have been to the point where all I could do was TRUST.  And you know what…sometimes I failed.  So what is TRUST all about.  According to the dictionary, TRUST is

reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, etc., of a person or thing

confident expectation of something

There is a lot I could say about TRUST but instead I would rather share a favorite Scripture verse, a favorite song, and a beautiful quote; the verse and the song became my heart’s cry in the not so distant past when TRUSTING God was my best option.  The quote is just solid truth that I couldn’t resist sharing.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding…

~Proverbs 3:5 ~

The song is Trust in You by Lauren Daigle.

And a quote from Steven Curtis Chapman’s book Between Heaven and the Real World

One of the amazing things about our God is how He can take even the broken parts of our stories and bring about something beautiful as we TRUST Him with them.

(oh and my 5 minutes is up!)

Until tomorrow…Joy to You!

Hope ~ A 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes Post

This is the 4th post in the 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes.  It might just be my favorite word:

HOPE

And GO…

Let’s start with the meaning of the word HOPE, which by the way is a noun and a verb:

NOUN

the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best

a person or thing in which expectations are centered

VERB

to look forward to with desire and reasonable confidence

to believe, desire, or trust

HOPE is one of those things that we want to have.    And I think, for the most part, people do have HOPE.  We HOPE in the things of this earth…you know for good weather, for good health, etc…  It’s just a good feeling to have HOPE. Personally, I can relate to both the noun and verb form of the word.  As a noun, my HOPE is in Christ.  As a verb, I look forward to with…reasonable confidence the things that God has for me and my family.

My two favorite verses both have the word HOPE in them:

Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.

~Romans 12:12 ~

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

~ Romans 15:13 ~

These have carried me through tough times and allowed me to encourage others as I have prayed these verses for many friends and family over the years.

And STOP…

As is my pattern, I have a little more to share. God’s Word tells us that our HOPE is from God (Psalm 39:7).  That He is our HOPE and our trust (Psalm 71:5). That our HOPE is in His Word (Psalm 119:114).   That HOPE brings joy (Proverbs 10:28). That we HOPE in Him because He is our portion (Lamentations 3:24). And lastly that love HOPES all things (1 Corinthians 13:7).

Until tomorrow…Joy & HOPE to you!
