Try ~ A 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes

It’s day 14 of the 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes.  If you are just joining me, this is where I use a given prompt and write for 5 minutes.  Honestly there are many days that I can stick to just five minutes.

Anyway, the timer is set.  And GO……..

Today’s word is

The definition, according to dictionary.com is this:

to attempt to do or accomult of (often followed by out)

to endeavor to evaluate by experiment or experience

to test the quality, value, fitness, accuracy, etc

to put to a severe test; subject to strain, as of endurance, patience, affliction, or trouble; tax

I really could erase all of the definition except for ”to endeavor”.  Those two words are hitting home with me right now.  The reason — I am TRYING something new.  For almost a year now, I have been helping out a friend and fellow blogger with administrative tasks.  I absolutely love the job of mine.  It gives me flexibility for my family when earning extra income.   That being said, I am ready to TRY to expand my business.  I am excited and nervous, however, I just God to do with it what He will.  I just want to glorify Him in all I say and do.

What is it that you need to TRY today?  I’d encourage you to lay whatever it is at the feet of Jesus.

Until tomorrow…Joy to You!

And STOP! (can you please I finished in less than 5 minutes?!)

Plan ~ A 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes

Welcome to Day 9 of the Write 31 challenge.  Today’s word is:And GO…

For the purpose of this post, I am going to look at PLAN as a noun.  Here’s how the dictionary defines it:

NOUN

a scheme or method of acting, doing, proceeding, making, etc., developed in advance

a design or scheme of arrangement

a specific project or definite purpose

It is safe to say that I had my life all PLANNED out from a pretty young age.  I knew what I wanted to be “when I grew up,”  how many kids I wanted, where I wanted to live, etc., etc.  I had a method to proceed with…a design…a definite purpose.  And I thought I could PLAN it.  I thought I could work it all out and make it happen.

But God……… (don’t you love it when the Bible says “but God”).

Proverbs 16:9 says:

The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.

Yep, God had other PLANS for me.  He does for all of us.   And I for one am so very glad.

The PLAN that we had for our family was not at all what God’s sovereign PLAN was..and what it still is.    And we have no idea the complete PLAN.  We’re in ministry full time.  That means that we may not always live in the same place.  That means that on vacations and holidays, we visit family instead of venturing off to a new and different location.   (Note: that is not a complaint.  We love visiting our family and our hometown). But what this also means is that we have had the honor and privilege of living in a few different cities.  With that, we have met so many wonderful people.  We have “family” scattered across the Southeast.  We have experienced so much that if God had allowed me to PLAN our lives, we would have missed.

I am grateful and blessed by the PLANS of the Lord.

And STOP….

Until tomorrow…Joy to You!

Hold ~ A 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes

It’s day 7 of the Write 31 challenge.  My Five Minute Free write prompt is:

My 5 minutes starts HERE…

My very first thought is to HOLD my loved ones a little closer.  With all that’s going on in our world, I just want those important to me within reach.

That’s the human side of me.  I think it’s completely within reason.  But then there is what I know to be true about God.  First, since I’ve got this definition thing going, here is how the dictionary defines HOLD:

to have or keep in the hand; keep fast; grasp

to set aside; reserve or retain

to bear, sustain, or support, as with the hands or arms, or by any other means

More important, what does Scripture say?

The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot.  ~ Psalm 16:5

Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. ~ Psalm 73:23

Okay, back to HOLDING on to those who are dear to me…and the truth about God.  He HOLDS us.  He is not surprised by anything and I mean anything that happens.  I just have to say a big, “Whew!!!” to that.  As Psalm 16 says, He holds my lot.  The name of my blog is Living My Portion.  If I didn’t believe Psalm 16:5, I’d have to rename by blog {smile}.  And I know He HOLDS me and my loved ones in His right hand just like Psalm 73 says.

And TIME IS UP….

Hope you don’t mind if I finish my thoughts…

I’m experiencing something very new as our son is now in college.  He’s 6-½ hours away.  That means that I can’t just have a meal with him or walk down the hallway to chat.  And because his class and work schedule is varied, I have to figure out when I can call.  Here’s the thing.  As much as I miss him, I’m really (surprisingly) okay.  See, ultimately he is the Lord’s.  And those verses that I listed above…well, they apply to my son too.  There will come a time when I will have to let my daughter go out in the world too and I have to trust the Lord to HOLD her just as He is HOLDING onto my son.  I find it comforting that I don’t have to worry.

So today, who are you allowing the Lord to HOLD like only He can?

I’ve gone way over my time.

Until tomorrow…Joy to You!

Trust ~ A 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes Post

31 Days ofFive Minute Free Writes(1)

It’s day 5 in the Write 31 challenge and well, this one is a bit challenging…

And GO…

This post is not challenging because of the word itself.  It’s a challenging topic.  Why?  Because I have been to the point where all I could do was TRUST.  And you know what…sometimes I failed.  So what is TRUST all about.  According to the dictionary, TRUST is

reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, etc., of a person or thing

confident expectation of something

There is a lot I could say about TRUST but instead I would rather share a favorite Scripture verse, a favorite song, and a beautiful quote; the verse and the song became my heart’s cry in the not so distant past when TRUSTING God was my best option.  The quote is just solid truth that I couldn’t resist sharing.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding…

~Proverbs 3:5 ~

The song is Trust in You by Lauren Daigle.

And a quote from Steven Curtis Chapman’s book Between Heaven and the Real World

One of the amazing things about our God is how He can take even the broken parts of our stories and bring about something beautiful as we TRUST Him with them.

(oh and my 5 minutes is up!)

Until tomorrow…Joy to You!

Hope ~ A 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes Post

This is the 4th post in the 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes.  It might just be my favorite word:

HOPE

And GO…

Let’s start with the meaning of the word HOPE, which by the way is a noun and a verb:

NOUN

the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best

a person or thing in which expectations are centered

VERB

to look forward to with desire and reasonable confidence

to believe, desire, or trust

HOPE is one of those things that we want to have.    And I think, for the most part, people do have HOPE.  We HOPE in the things of this earth…you know for good weather, for good health, etc…  It’s just a good feeling to have HOPE. Personally, I can relate to both the noun and verb form of the word.  As a noun, my HOPE is in Christ.  As a verb, I look forward to with…reasonable confidence the things that God has for me and my family.

My two favorite verses both have the word HOPE in them:

Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.

~Romans 12:12 ~

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

~ Romans 15:13 ~

These have carried me through tough times and allowed me to encourage others as I have prayed these verses for many friends and family over the years.

And STOP…

As is my pattern, I have a little more to share. God’s Word tells us that our HOPE is from God (Psalm 39:7).  That He is our HOPE and our trust (Psalm 71:5). That our HOPE is in His Word (Psalm 119:114).   That HOPE brings joy (Proverbs 10:28). That we HOPE in Him because He is our portion (Lamentations 3:24). And lastly that love HOPES all things (1 Corinthians 13:7).

Until tomorrow…Joy & HOPE to you!

Create ~ A 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes Post

31 Days ofFive Minute Free Writes(1)Welcome to day three of the 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes.  Today’s word is just fun…

CREATE

So I’ll get right to it.  Timer set….and GO!

I was an art major in college.  My focus was Interior Design.  Now that might sound exciting and creative but I am more systematic.  I ended up in commercial design and most of my time was spent specifying and space planning office cubicles.  There’s just not a lot of creativity to cubicles {sigh}…except maybe choosing the fabrics and finishes.  Anyway, despite my career choice, I do love to be creative.  But enough about me.

As usual, I like to see what the word means.  According to the dictionary, CREATE means:

to cause to come into being, as something unique that would not naturally evolve or that is not made by ordinary processes.

to evolve from one’s own thought or imagination, as a work of art or an invention

What comes to mind when you think of CREATE?  My first thought is, of course, CREATION.  Genesis 1:1 tells us…

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

And what a beautiful CREATION it is.  I mean all you have to do is look at the sunset, or sunrise – but I am rarely up that early {smile} – the oceans, the mountains, the flowers, the trees…you get the idea.  As we look at His amazing CREATION we get a sense of just how mighty and powerful He is.  Oh and don’t forget people!  We are all uniquely CREATED by God.  Isn’t that cool?  To think that He formed each of us with specific eye color, shape, personality!  It’s really amazing to me.

AND STOP…(my 5 minutes is up)

Like yesterday, five minutes just isn’t enough.  I wanted to share a few quotes that I found about CREATE or CREATIVITY just for fun.

“Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes and having fun” ~ Mary Lou Cook (actress)

“Create the things you wish existed.” ~ unknown

“Creativity is intelligence having fun.” ~  often credited to Albert Einstein

I hear people say all the time that they are not CREATIVE.  I don’t buy it.  We all have something to contribute.  So, what will you CREATE today?

Until Tomorrow…Joy to You!

Worship ~ A 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes Post

I love the Five Minute Free Write for today.  Actually, I love them all.  How will I keep it to just five minutes? {smile}  Anyway, today’s writing prompt is WORSHIP.   So here goes…

WORSHIP

When I think of WORSHIP, I think of a way of life.  As a follower of Christ, I know that I am to do everything as unto the Lord (Colossians 3:23).  And if I am doing all for the Lord, then I consider that to be WORSHIP.

But what does the word WORSHIP really mean?  Here is what I found in the dictionary:

reverent honor and homage paid to God

adoring reverence or regard

We attend WORSHIP on Sunday mornings where we sing, pray, and listen to the Word of God preached.  I love WORSHIP music and could list more than a dozen songs about WORSHIP.  But I think I’ll take a slightly different approach.

You see, I have a favorite book.  It’s called The Practice of the Presence of God.  It is written by Brother Lawrence, a French monk who lived in the 1600s.  This little book was key in helping to understand that WORSHIP is a lifestyle.

Of course, the Bible also tells us what true WORSHIP is.  Romans 12: 1 says:

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

True and proper WORSHIP!  That is what I strive for.

AND stop…(my 5 minutes is up)

Until tomorrow…Joy to You!
