14 But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?” 15 We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; 16 yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.
He called him out and then moved on to the most important point, in my opinion, of the verses that we are reading today. Verse 16 is the truth that we need to hear. We are NOT justified in Christ by the works that we do.
We aren’t to just sit around and do nothing. Jesus, in John 14:12 talks to us about works:
Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; …
And later James 2:22 reminds us that faith is completed by works:
You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; ….
So it’s our FAITH!!!
Our “works” are shown through our faith. Isn’t God good to call us to Himself AND that our faith is based on our belief in Christ Jesus? And that because of our works, our faith is complete?
I’m going to marinate on this for a while. I need to because sometimes, I get caught up in the doing.
Until tomorrow….Joy to You!
