SNOW!!!!!!!!!! Protocol, a Concert & a Field Trip (HMJ – 2/22/13)

In my life this week…

snowYep!  It snowed in Hartsville, SC.  For those of you not familiar with our little town, or with SC, we don’t get much snow.  Especially where we live.  We’re closer to the coast than the mountains so we don’t even have to pull out winter coats very often and we certainly don’t get snow very often.  We did not get a lot but it was snow just the same.  The kids were super excited.  It reminded them of the snowflakes that we saw during our 6 years in KY.

Saturday night our co-op had a “Protocol Night” for the 7th and 8th graders.  They had to dress up in their Sunday best. Doesn’t he look handsome in his bow tie?   He taught himself to tie it!!   The purpose of the evening was to teach them etiquette.  The kids were paired up by the boys drawing a girl’s name from a basket.  For the entire evening, the boys escorted the girls and helped them with their chairs, held the door for them, opened and closed the car doors, etc.   A veteran homeschool mom was their etiquette instructor.  She taught them many things including, but not limited to,  which fork is for what and even touched on cell phone etiquette.  After a four course meal, the kids went to a show at our community theater.  It turned out not to be what we were told it would be, so we left.  The mom who had planned the evening explained that it’s okay to leave an event or place when it’s not what needs to be before your eyes, in your mind,  and especially if it’s not honoring to the Lord.   A good life lesson!  The dinner had taken place at a local church, who graciously allowed us to use their facility, so we took the kids back there to be picked up by their parents.  It was snowing really hard so they all went out — in their dressy clothes — and had a snow ball fight.  I think they enjoyed that more than anything!!!
Monday night, our family went to see All Sons and Daughters at a church in a nearby town.  We discovered them in November when they opened for Chris Tomlin.  The thing I love most about them is that their concert is a worship service.  If you’re not familiar with them, you can find them on Spotify and YouTube.
The rest of the week was pretty normal until Friday when the kids and I headed to Greenville to see family and took in a bit of history.
In our homeschool this week…
We had a good week.  The highlight was our field trip.  Leah is doing a report on a county for her SC History Class at co-op and she chose Greenville.  They have a great museum dedicated to Upstate History so we toured the museum and then I took her to a few places of interest in town that could be a part of her presentation.  It was fun to have Nana with us because we always love having Nana with us and because she knows so much about Greenville’s history.
Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share… for extra help with math is a wonderful thing.
I am inspired by…
This blog post that I read by Lysa TerKeurst on Monday this week.  I was in a ‘just need to sit down and have a good cry’ mood when I received the email that Lysa had a new blog post.  I opened it and began to read and then I began to cry.  She was describing the way I was feeling.  She was reminding me that I need to always focus on the Lord and allow His light to shine in my life.  Lysa’s words of encouragement combined with the concert Monday night were a gift from the Lord.
Places we’ve been…
Concert, Greenville, my favorite Italian restaurant in Greenville, out in the snow!!
My favorite thing this week was…
Laughing with my sweet friend Caroline on the phone on Thursday afternoon.  Laughter really is good medicine!!
What’s working/not working for us…
I am being more intentional about watching Wyatt’s math videos with him.  Math is not my thing so it helps me help him when I watch the video with him.  Prior to being intentional about watching it together, I would watch it when I couldn’t quite remember that particular thing in pre-algebra.
Questions/thoughts I have…
Trying to figure out the right schedule for our day so that both kids get the individual attention they need and so that I don’t feel like I am neglecting them.  You would think that I would have this by now but I don’t.
Things I’m working on…
Still memorizing.
I’m STILL reading …
Same two books but didn’t get much reading done this week.
I’m cooking…
Not much this week.
I’m grateful for…
Grace given freely to me by my Heavenly Father.
I’m praying for…
A photo, video, link, or quote to share…
Blessed are those at the end of their rope because they can be tied to God.   ~ Ann Voskamp (Feb. 18, 2013 blog post)
Thanks again for joining me on my homeschool journey.  I’m linked up with The Homeschool Mother’s Journal over at iHomeschool Network.
Joy to You!
